ABC News $15 million dollar Settlement and public apology for Donald Trump
ABC News has reached a settlement agreement amounting to $15 million to be paid towards Donald Trump's future presidential library. This agreement also includes a public apology from ABC News concerning inaccurate statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos during a broadcast in March 2023.
The settlement came to light through court documents released on Saturday and precludes upcoming depositions that had been scheduled.
The defamation lawsuit was filed by Trump after Stephanopoulos, during an interview segment on "This Week," inaccurately stated that Trump had been "found liable for rape" related to allegations from writer E. Jean Carroll. In conjunction with the settlement, ABC News will also pay $1 million in legal fees to Trump's attorneys.
Despite attempts by ABC News and Stephanopoulos to dismiss the suit based on a legal interpretation of the jury's conclusions regarding the rape allegations, the court rejected their motion, reinforcing the seriousness of the claims and their potential harm to Trump's reputation.
Underpinning the case, Judge Lewis Kaplan clarified that while the jury concluded Carroll had not proven rape by narrow legal definitions, this did not diminish the serious nature.
The statement released by ABC News reflects a tone of recognition of the inaccuracy in their reporting. Maybe their acknowledgment of the error signifies an intent to mend relations with Trump and mitigate potential damages resulting from the defamatory statements made on air.
This settlement is likely to positively influence Trump’s public image, by reaching a resolution and securing a public acknowledgment of the inaccuracies from ABC News.
