In a surprising shift of events, Meta has confirmed a donation of $1 million to Donald Trump's inaugural fund. This contribution marks a significant departure from the company's previous stance, given its history of strained interactions with Trump.
Meta's donation, revealed on Thursday and first reported by the Wall Street Journal, comes amid a backdrop of tense relations between Trump and the platform.
The relationship hit a low point during the previous elections of 2020, when Trump accused Facebook of censoring conservative voices, labeling the company as "an enemy of the people." Despite these strained dynamics from the past, Zuckerberg and Trump seem to be mending their opinions of each other.
A donation followed by a dinner meeting at Mar-a-Lago, where Zuckerberg and Trump reportedly exchanged pleasantries and Trump was congratulated by Zuckerberg on his electoral victory.
Meta confirmed the $1 million donation to UK-based publication the Guardian, although specifics regarding the motivation behind the contribution were not disclosed.
The dinner at Mar-a-Lago in late October saw Zuckerberg not only congratulating Trump but also interacting with key figures from the incoming administration, including Senator Marco Rubio and advisor Stephen Miller. This engagement suggests a newfound willingness by Zuckerberg to engage with Trump’s circle.
Historically, relations between Meta and Trump have been fraught with controversy. Following the January 6 attack on the Capitol in 2021, Trump faced a suspension from Meta's platforms, which remained in place until 2023 when his account was restored with certain restrictions. The dynamic shifted over the summer as Trump praised Zuckerberg for allegedly staying neutral during the election campaigns.
This shift culminated in Zuckerberg’s public admiration for Trump during a July interview, where he described Trump’s response to the assassination attempt at the Pennsylvania rally as "one of the most bad**s things I've ever seen."
The Guardian reported that, "Zuckerberg expressed regret around some of his past political activities in a letter to Congress in late August and accused the Biden administration of pressuring Meta in 2021 into censoring more Covid-19 content than he was comfortable with."
In August 2024, Zuckerberg admitted to Congress of censoring information about COVID as well as information that could sway the previous 2020 election between Trump and Biden.
The significance of the $1 million donation represents a potential strategic pivot by Meta towards building better relations with the upcoming Trump administration. Meta did not contribute to Trump's 2017 or Biden's 2021 inaugural funds, making this donation noteworthy.
